New Demetria photoshoot & article

Downward spiral

When skinniness didn't provide her with the friends or happiness she yearned for, Demi sought solace in drugs. It was reported that she was snorting cocaine, but Demi - aware of the influence on her young fan base - is reluctant to go into detail.

Club promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in clubs

"It's something I don't really want to talk about," she says apologetically. "What I can say is that I was depressed. I would come off stage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I'd come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay 'up'."

Being based in Hollywood made it easier to get access to illegal substances.

"Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs. They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass," she says, a flash of anger briefly interrupting her sunny demeanour.

"I thought they were my friends. I thought I was having fun. Being a celebrity can be dangerous. Nobody says 'no'. That's why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me."

When the drugs didn't block out her pain, she cut herself. "It started with my wrists. People saw that, so I cut in places they couldn't see," she says.

"You do it because you feel so bad inside. You don't know how to take it out other than on yourself."

Demi - whose mother Dianna, a former cheerleader, divorced her father Patrick when Demi was just two - felt unable to confide in her parents.

"I'd just get scolded if they found out," she says. "They were worried, but I knew they wouldn't understand. I had a hard time opening up to friends. People were there for me but I didn't utilise them. Do I wish I had? Yes."

Instead, she threw herself into her work. Demi's first album, Don't Forget, was released in 2008. The following year she starred in the Disney film, Princess Protection Program, and released her second album, Here We Go Again. It shot to No.1 in the US charts.

"I went from movie to album to touring to television and back," she says. "Being in the limelight wasn't the root of my problems, but it didn't help. I never took more than two weeks off in four years and it caught up with me."

A long road

Nor does Demi plan to resume acting until she is fully confident. "I need to be secure in my body before I go back in front of the camera. Anyone in recovery from an eating disorder would find that triggering, and I'm not ready," she says.

She admits her stunning new size 10-12 body is taking some getting used to: "After so long being thin, it was terrifying being heavier. But I am a naturally curvy Hispanic girl. I don't deprive myself - I had a Kit Kat last night, but I don't eat s*** every day. I have a meal service that brings my food to my home so I don't have to think about being healthy."

Although she no longer drinks, Demi admits that she has self-harmed and made herself throw up since leaving rehab. "I've slipped up a few times, but each time I have learned from it, and it's become further apart," she says.

She's still BFFs with Miley Cyrus, and has found an unlikely ally in Cheryl Cole, who, after watching a recent MTV documentary about Demi's troubles, tweeted her support. "I was so excited. I'd love to meet her," Demi says. Currently single, her exes include Joe Jonas, 22, and actor Wilder Valderrama, 32.

"I'm not dating at all. I love having a boyfriend but need to be secure on my own first," she says.

Despite Demi having had a lifetime of troubles before she's even 20, she insists she has no regrets.

"There were times I wish I'd been a normal teenager so I could make mistakes and not be scrutinised. But I don't mourn the childhood I never had. I'd rather have been travelling the world and making albums than at high school."

And as for the bullies who made her life hell? "I don't think or care about them," she says. "I wouldn't change what I went through. I've learned from it and it's made me stronger."

wow didn't know she was snorting coke, thats something else, how'd she get off that addiction ?!
acciomileycyrus 22nd-Apr-2012 11:11 am (UTC)
rehab?
wendilili 22nd-Apr-2012 11:51 am (UTC)
She got help with that at the treatment center too.
pseudovirus 22nd-Apr-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
seriously? there were only 5235245 blind items about it and everyone on here's pretty much known for yearsss. one of our old members legit did lines with her more than once back in '09.

and plenty of people kick a coke habit, many don't even get addicted using it. i'm sure that was part of her treatment plan at timberline knolls. she's talked about self-medicated with drugs & alcohol a LOT, what kinda drugs did you think she was talking about? lol

wow she looks very, very pretty here! i miss ddlovato now
wendilili 22nd-Apr-2012 11:54 am (UTC)
She looks gorgeous!! And that was a great interview although the fact that people gave her drugs and alcohol because of their own greedy reasons makes me really mad since she was just a child.
x_beccy_jonas_x 22nd-Apr-2012 12:01 pm (UTC)
She looks pretty :)
It's a good interview.
sketch_o1 22nd-Apr-2012 12:33 pm (UTC)
Wow, she looks so pretty. Usually hate reading her interviews, because it's always recycled, but I like her honesty here.
rogueguy 22nd-Apr-2012 12:53 pm (UTC)
She looks amazing in the shoot

And this was a really good interview
imahouseofcards 22nd-Apr-2012 12:55 pm (UTC)
She looks pretty but the no longing drinking is bullshit
fineapplewine 22nd-Apr-2012 01:13 pm (UTC)
Horrendous pictures.
acciomileycyrus 22nd-Apr-2012 01:16 pm (UTC)
Hey, at least they're a step-up from her other ones i.e that awful shoot she did with Shields.

adorabledoll 22nd-Apr-2012 01:55 pm (UTC)
Omg :3
fuckingsookie 22nd-Apr-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
I think she looks qt in these pictures :3 The article was different than any she's done and I'm surprised that she even talked about the promoters tbh. I do believe it tho because I know club promoters here who will gladly give high school kids alcohol and drugs so they'll come back with their friends and bring in more profit
jollyrobot 22nd-Apr-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
omg i love the photoshoot
playcrackthesky 22nd-Apr-2012 03:16 pm (UTC)
I like how the interview was different, for once. And that's really shitty of those club promoters.
stolemyheartx 22nd-Apr-2012 03:38 pm (UTC)
I think this is the first interview where she has actually acknowledged the cocaine use(even though she didn't go into detail). She's always said she self medicated but never really much more than that but now she talked about the promoters & trying to recreate the feeling of staying up. I like that she's getting more open about it.
fraitors 22nd-Apr-2012 04:25 pm (UTC)
this was a really good interview! it's interesting that she actually spoke about the drugs in further detail
& lmao that pic in the middle.. the others are cute tho
prettyoneplay 22nd-Apr-2012 04:51 pm (UTC)
mte. i definitely am not saying she's lying about them giving her drinks/drugs, but they aren't completely to blame.
electricblues 22nd-Apr-2012 05:16 pm (UTC)
mte, it's always someone else's fault
wendilili 22nd-Apr-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
lol, how is she doing that? She explained why she used drugs and how she got them. What do you want her to say? Besides, she was a child those club owners should have known better.
wendilili 22nd-Apr-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
You're talking like she said that they were the reason she got on drugs, she just said they were how she got the drugs.
This is explaining why she got on drugs:
"What I can say is that I was depressed. I would come off stage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I'd come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay 'up'."
This is explaining how she got the drugs:
"Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs. They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass," she says, a flash of anger briefly interrupting her sunny demeanour.

She never put any blame on the club owners for her addiction like you're implying. So you want her to apologize for her addiction and if she doesn't she's not taking responsibility? That doesn't make sense.

Ehm what are you talking about? She said she was at clubs and restaurants, then she's not alone in her bedroom.
talklikelions 22nd-Apr-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
idk I'd come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay 'up'." sounds to me like she's admitting that she was partially to blame, too.
sweetchild92 23rd-Apr-2012 02:18 am (UTC)
LMFAO RIGHT
electricblues 22nd-Apr-2012 05:21 pm (UTC)
i remember all of the people who used to have the argument "she definitely doesn't do drugs, especially in public, don't you think someone would have photographic or video proof by now considering how famous she is??"

it just goes to show how easily this stuff gets covered up...i am glad she's finally being this honest about it, but i wish she'd really take full responsibility. i understand that she was young and easily influenced, but that doesn't make her some innocent puppet in the whole thing
wendilili 22nd-Apr-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
Demi has said that she did drugs from the beginning so she has always been honest about it, she just never got in to detail about it.

I really don't get what you mean with "take full responsibility", what do you want her to say? She never said the club owners was the reason she got on drugs but she said they were how she got them. She's not blaming anyone for the addiction.
electricblues 22nd-Apr-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
actually, it took a while for the entire drug side of things to even enter the discussion. no, she didn't outright say that she hadn't been using, but it also didn't get as much screen time as her eating disorder/self-harm discussions. and i agree with what curlychikk was saying. the way demi phrases it, she doesn't even acknowledge that she had a choice - which she should be.
wendilili 22nd-Apr-2012 05:45 pm (UTC)
I remember Demi talking about "self-medicating" last year.

And I'm to lazy to write the same thing again, this response applies to your comment too:

electricblues 22nd-Apr-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
....again, i never said she didn't speak about it. but it was never as much of an open topic the way her other issues were, that's all. i think that it was done intentionally, but i'm not going to start that argument right now.

i understand what you're saying, it just seems like her typical way of shrugging full responsibility. that said, i am happy she's being more up front about things. she seems to be in a much better place right now than she was even a couple of weeks ago. i'm not attacking her, i'm just saying that this is a constant side of her that just bugs me a bit

The 3rd picture is really gorgeous!
I like the interview too, she sounds more honest than I usually thinks she does during interviews.
Thank god i'm not living under the spotlights. I could never handle the pressure/resisting the temptation famous people generally have to go through.
hiddenfantasyx 22nd-Apr-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
lmao
oyecrackiao 22nd-Apr-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
I love how honest and open she is here. Sounds like a party gal if you ask me.

That first picture tho... lol nagl.
talklikelions 22nd-Apr-2012 07:53 pm (UTC)
I like that she's finally starting to be more honest about the drug use and everything.

Also not shocked at all that she was handed drugs like candy. I've said before I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people at Disney gave her access to uppers.

don't believe for a minute that she doesn't drink anymore though.
talklikelions 22nd-Apr-2012 07:58 pm (UTC)
she doesn't look like a 10-12 to me tho
fuckingsookie 22nd-Apr-2012 08:39 pm (UTC)
The article is from a British magazine so they used the UK measurements instead of the US one. A UK 10/12 is a US 6/8 so thats what they're saying she is. I still don't think she's wearing a 6/8 though lol
talklikelions 22nd-Apr-2012 09:03 pm (UTC)
OH lol yeah Brit sizes are different. I see her as a US 6, tops, tbh. If she were taller I'd believe her to be a bigger size but her body is proportional to her height and she's so short lol.
sweetchild92 23rd-Apr-2012 02:44 am (UTC)
Kudos to the interviewer. No reason the drug use should get less attention than the other issues.
arianagrande 23rd-Apr-2012 03:06 am (UTC)
she looks so pretty in the photo shoot.
