Miley Cyrus LOL bombs at the box office

Photo: Lionsgate FilmsWe knew the chances for this one were slim, but now that the results are in, it's sort of epic.

Miley Cyrus' film "LOL," made a total of only $46,500 this weekend, Movie City News estimates. That is just a few hundred dollars more than what "Marvel's The Avengers" -- which drew a record-breaking weekend total of more than $200 million -- took in per theater: $46,100, according to MCN.

Sure, it had a much narrower release, appearing in only 105 theaters nationwide, but "LOL" made less per-theater ($440) than any other film in conventional U.S. theaters this weekend, running behind "Wrath of the Titans," which made $640 per theater (and has been out for more than a month).

Cyrus is already on damage control. Today she tweeted:

Thank u so much for everyone who went to see LOL. It is a film I loved making and I am proud of.... That's really all that matters to me. ❤

"My guess is Lionsgate had test screenings that were catastrophic," says box office analyst Len Klady of "LOL"'s weak weekend reception, adding that he wasn't aware of any conventional advertising going on. Indeed, the film did not have a premiere event and Cyrus did no interviews with major outlets for "LOL," indicating much-curtailed -- if non existent -- publicity. Moreover, the film was not screened for review, leading one journalist to say, "...for all we know, 'LOL' stands for lack of laughter. Proceed with caution."

"Miley Cyrus has a real image problem," Klady adds. "Basically she's been undone by 'Saturday Night Live'… people don't take her seriously."

Based on a French film, "LOL" was meant to mark Miley Cyrus' transition into more serious acting. Also starring Demi Moore, "LOL" has been given the silent treatment by Lionsgate.

There did seem a last-ditch attempt to get a groundswell of Miley's fans  (she has 5.6 million followers on Twitter) to the theaters where it was opening. Stories on mileycyrusworld.org andmileyraycyrus.org -- which literally listed every theater and city in which "LOL" would be screening -- attempted to create hype. From Miley Cyrus World on Friday (the day "LOL" was released in the U.S.):

...we need a lot of people to see the movie when it's released. If more people go to see it, Lionsgate might expand it into more theaters — which is already a possibility so we need all of you fans in those areas to go and see the movie!

Apparently the fans didn't bite.

everything_mrc 7th-May-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
What do you expect if they only had it play in a few states..
cantfink 7th-May-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
Ouch. And of course Miley will carry all the blame. :(
porifera_robert 7th-May-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
with no promotion and all, what did we expect?
everything_mrc 7th-May-2012 11:39 pm (UTC)
what did anyone expect? hmm. so true.
den772 7th-May-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
Wow that was really bad. I’m not even comparing it with the big budget films some other limited releases with even lower theater locations did better than LOL 100 locations. Ouch that sucks.

"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" $737,051 in 27 locations so an average $27,298 per theater.
"First Position" $48,024 in 5 locations an average of $9,605 per theater.
"Deitrick Haddon's A Beautiful Soul" $46,410 in 20 locations an average of $2,321 per theater.
dream_off_track 9th-May-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)
To be fair to LOL you really can't compare it to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel given the cast and name recognition they have. Otherwise yeah, it all seems quite pitiful.
peppaminy 7th-May-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
I didn't even know it was out.
__yourlovely 8th-May-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
me neither, I was (am) actually interested in seeing it.
copulates 7th-May-2012 11:43 pm (UTC)
is anyone surprised though? it took forever to be released and there was no promotion whatsoever
flutesinger262 7th-May-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
yeah, Hannah Montana wasn't cancelled.

and as a Selena stan you don't get to talk about flopping movies. Selena's movies got shitloads of promo, if LOL got the same it could have done just as well as Selenas if not much better
fighttheprocess 7th-May-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
Oh.

Well at least this is getting promo in Germany apparently. Can't wait to see it.
pseudovirus 7th-May-2012 11:48 pm (UTC)
how surprising, with how much promo it was given
talklikelions 7th-May-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)
Miley didn't even bother plugging it on her own time, like seriously if the star of it gives no fucks and there's no promo, it's to be expected that it flops. Making it out like Miley is a joke is pretty pathetic though. Even my mother thinks she's a great philanthropist and talented. And my mom doesn't pay attention to celebrities.
pseudovirus 7th-May-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)
and btw cumdropbuttons has had like 6 accounts in the past month that they've trolled with on here soooooooo banned again
den772 8th-May-2012 12:04 am (UTC)
So when will Cantbetamed be banned btw she has been trolling for over a year not just a month? Honestly you ban trolls which is ok and perfect but why not her? Sorry no disrespect but seriously.
zefsofresh 7th-May-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
not surprised at all. if it weren't for this comm, i would have had literally ZERO knowledge that this movie even existed.
pseudovirus 7th-May-2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
srsly

literally no one knew about this movie, not even in the cities it was playing in. there was no promotion. the only time it was on TV was 20 seconds on 'entertainment tonight', there were no commercials, no print ads, no billboards, no online campaigns... if you don't visit disney/teen gossip sites/follow miley cyrus twitters idk how you would even know about this movie....
teenagedreamxxx 7th-May-2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
there's still hope for SU... i think.
flawlessa 7th-May-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
idts, that movie was better off for release in 2011 and I can't see its intended audience caring in 2016 when it comes out. Weinstein can keep it for all I care at this point.
flawlessa 7th-May-2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
W/e can it go to DVD already so I can buy it and watch in HQ
