"She is not supposed to be dating for a year. But, then again, she has never been very good at following directions. So she has agreed to be set up with a very hot celebrity. The setup was orchestrated by her boss, who has a vested interest in getting publicity for both the boy and the girl.

They cut a deal for an initial four month contract – ending just before Christmas – with an option for renewal. While the couple hadn’t even met yet, their first “date”, complete with paparazzi photos, is scheduled for August. IA, it's odd... I kinda get the need for the closeted gay guys to do it to dispel the rumors.. but it's so widespread these days for co-stars to "date" until they move on to the next project (and the next fake relationship)

Dude, you should not base your respect for celebrities, especially ones as big as Niall/1D in gen, on their publicity moves. When you're on an upward swing to fame, you'll do anything you can to keep going until you get to the top.

It's mostly Simon Cowell who is arranging this. It gets more press for X Factor US and also puts Niall in the tabloids. While he is famous, 1D is fairly new to the US and anything to get them and Demi to become a household name before X Factor is a plus. Especially if they do officially date around August, which is right before the premiere of X Factor.

Niall seems genuinely interested in her. You see how he acts when her name is mentioned and how the boys make fun of him for how much he loves demi. I'm not sure if demi really likes him tho.
